Creative Hour: Impossible Variant, 40 Years Later

December 17, 2024 | 5:30 PM

Join us for Creative Hour: Impossible Variant, 40 Years Later, an event marking the 40th anniversary of the publication of the short story collection Impossible Variant by Stanislav Habjan. Published in 1984 as part of the first edition of the Quorum library series, this collection is a cornerstone of the Quorum generation’s prose and a significant literary milestone of the 1980s in Croatian literature.

Impossible Variant established an authentic poetic paradigm of the 1980s, intertwining intercultural and intermedial elements while creating a dialogue with both popular and canonical culture. Through intellectual play, self-irony, and narrative self-awareness, Habjan crafted a work that transcends decades and retains its cult status to this day.

To commemorate the anniversary, the publishing house Petikat, in collaboration with Dubravka Zima, is organizing a scholarly colloquium to reflect on the literary atmosphere of the 1980s, contextualize the collection within the history of Croatian literature, and examine the cultural legacy of the 1980s.

Participants in the colloquium include:

  • Branko Čegec
  • Katarina Mažuran
  • Jagna Pogačnik
  • Sven Popović
  • Nenad Rizvanović

The colloquium will be moderated by Dubravka Zima.

Join us to explore the history and legacy of one of the most important literary works of the 1980s and its resonance in contemporary culture.
