Architecture and Music explores the relationship between space and sound through the lens of acoustics – a medium that connects spatial characteristics with the ways in which sound is produced, propagated, and experienced. Through an introductory lecture and a musical programme, the event opens a dialogue between space, sound, and the ways in which we perceive them.
The lecture focuses on Iannis Xenakis, a composer, architect, and engineer whose interdisciplinary approach had a profound impact on 20th-century music. It offers an overview of methods of graphic musical notation in his work, with particular emphasis on his engineering background and the influence it had on the development of his compositional techniques.
Particular attention will be given to the way Xenakis employs spatial representations of sound in his electronic and orchestral works. Through examples including Metastaseis, Pithoprakta, Mycènes alpha, and Anemoessa, the lecture explores how space can be translated into musical structures, as well as how music can shape our experience of space.
The programme is realised in collaboration with Marko Slaviček, architect and composer, whose interdisciplinary approach further connects architecture, space, and music.
The lecture will be followed by a musical programme performed by NAE Collective, featuring Vid Veljak on cello, Filip Merčep on clarinet, and Tomislav Oliver on electronics. The ensemble will perform works by Iannis Xenakis and Dubravko Detoni: Rebonds for percussion, Kottos for cello, and Grafika for percussion.
