After the summer break, we’re back at Urania with the work of designer Laura Mrkša. At the centre of the evening is Consuming Time, a work that explores the shifting boundary between work and rest, and asks what happens to the time that is meant to be ours.
In a world where we can work almost anytime and anywhere, rest increasingly becomes little more than a brief pause before the next obligation. Laura Mrkša approaches the bed as a space for negotiating between comfort and discomfort, work and leisure, productivity and – quite simply – time for oneself. Rather than seeing rest as a means of recharging for the next activity, Consuming Time reminds us that rest has value in and of itself.
The work takes the form of a bed made of transparent balls held within a hand-knotted rope net. The net was created through slow, repetitive movements inspired by traditional methods of mending fishing nets. Through material and process, the artist brings questions of unseen labour, care, patience and attention to the forefront – values that often remain overlooked within contemporary design.
In the second part of the evening, Laura Mrkša and Nataša Mihaljčišin, one of Croatia’s most prominent fashion designers and creative practitioners, will engage in a conversation about process, materials and the ways of thinking that shape their respective approaches to design.
Although they work across different media and come from different generational contexts, both designers share an investigative approach to design, placing process, material and social context at its centre. They are interested in design’s ability to ask questions, create space for reflection and shift the way we look at everyday life, rather than simply offering ready-made answers.
The conversation will explore themes of time, work, rest, sustainability and contemporary design, as well as ways of reconsidering the relationship between productivity and leisure – and the value of time that does not necessarily need to be “useful”.
The audience will also have the opportunity to sit, lie down and experience Consuming Time – to pause, rest and briefly surrender to leisure.
