Co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and the Croatian Composers’ Society.
Music and STEM – Urania 2026 takes place at Urania – Space of Creation in Zagreb, a recognized venue for interdisciplinary and innovative artistic practices. Conceived as a platform of lectures, discussions, and concerts, the program offers audiences insight into the processes behind contemporary music creation while demonstrating how scientific principles and technological innovations shape contemporary artistic expression.
The core of the program consists of lectures and concerts by composers whose work bridges music and STEM disciplines: Mladen Tarbuk, Boris Jakopović, Tibor Szirovicza, Luka Marohnić, Danijel Legin, and Stanko Juzbašić. Drawing from their own creative practices, the composers will discuss the influence of mathematical structures, acoustic principles, and emerging technologies on the compositional process, accompanied by performances of their own works as well as compositions by international composers exploring the relationship between music and science.
By combining lectures with concert performances, the project creates an interdisciplinary platform connecting composers, performers, scientists, and audiences. With this concert, Ensemble Synchronos launches a series of events presenting contemporary music as a space for research, innovation, and the exchange of ideas, reaffirming Urania as a meeting place for diverse fields of knowledge, creativity, and contemporary artistic practice.
The first event within the Music and STEM – Urania 2026 project is realized in collaboration with the Munich-based contemporary music ensemble Ultima Rara. This partnership inaugurates a program cycle through which Ensemble Synchronos explores the connections between contemporary music, mathematics, physics, technology, and new media.
The artistic profile of Ensemble Ultima Rara closely aligns with the project’s objectives. Their work is rooted in the exploration of new performance formats, the integration of interpretation and improvisation, and the incorporation of electronic music and contemporary performance practices.
The opening program features lectures by Mladen Tarbuk, Luka Marohnić, and Stanko Juzbašić.
