Innovation through Materials explores experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to the development of materials with advanced functions, while shaping new possibilities for their application in the built environment.
By addressing not only the technological but also the aesthetic potential of materials and innovative processes of material development, the lecture opens a dialogue between design and construction, in which architects take on a more active role in the complex process of materializing space.
When designing spaces through specific materials, materials simultaneously become a medium for new ideas, redefining the relationship between design, construction, and the everyday use of space. In this approach, materials cease to be passive elements of construction and become active participants in creating new spatial experiences.
Nafsika Efklidou is an architect and researcher based in Amsterdam whose work brings together landscape design and textile architecture, with a focus on nature-inspired and inclusive concepts.
At Inside Outside, she has initiated experimental projects exploring the potential of design, including “Bioreceptive Textiles,” and leads research within the “Living Soils” project, exploring the regenerative potential of soil biodiversity in urban environments.
In collaboration with TextileLab in Tilburg and microbiologists, she experiments with textiles that become bioreceptive, enabling microorganisms and plants to grow on their surfaces. Through this approach, natural processes are integrated into the processes of textile creation and development.
