Creative Hour: Modern Times

February 20, 2025 | 5:30 PM

How has Croatian design shaped the visual identity of society, and what key milestones have defined its development? The documentary series Modern Times explores the evolution of design from the 1950s to today, analysing its role in cultural, political, and economic contexts.

Through a conversation with the authors and collaborators of the series, we will open a dialogue on design as a tool for social communication, the archiving of collective memory, and its potential in a contemporary context.

Panelists:

  • Dubravko Merlić – author, producer, and screenwriter
  • Matej Merlić – author, producer, and composer
  • Tomislav Šoban – director
  • Maja Merlić Ilić – set designer
  • Klasja & Zita – designers

The authors of the series will share their insights into the research and production process, as well as their approach to visual storytelling and contextualizing Croatian design.

Design is much more than aesthetics – it is a reflection of its time, society, and the technology in which it is created. Where does Croatian design stand today? How does it communicate with global trends, and can it serve as a bridge between heritage and the future?

This lecture offers an opportunity to reflect on design as an integral part of culture and identity, as well as its role in future social and technological transformations.
