Acoustics is now recognized as one of the key parameters of sustainable and high-quality construction. The sound environment directly affects physical and mental health, productivity, and social cohesion. Studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) show that noise exposure in urban areas is the second most significant environmental cause of health problems in Europe, immediately after air pollution. The European Union, through the Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC) and a series of technical standards (EN ISO 3382, EN ISO 16283), defines the framework for noise control and the design of acoustic comfort in buildings.
Despite clear regulations, acoustics in design practice often remain marginalized, treated as a corrective phase rather than as an integral part of spatial conception. For this reason, Sustainable Hour at Urania, to be held on Thursday, October 2 at 5:30 PM, will address the topic of acoustics in buildings with the goal of positioning it as a criterion of architectural quality and sustainability.
Participants:
Moderator: Romana Ilić (Urania)
Program includes:
The final panel discussion (Veršić, Jambrošić, Horvat, Petošić, Biluš, Borko), moderated by Romana Ilić, will open the question: Can the acoustic quality of space be treated as seriously as energy efficiency or visual aesthetics? And what should the new standard be - from classrooms to office spaces and public buildings?
Acoustics is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for health and social sustainability. Sustainable Hour creates a space for critical discussion on this topic, connecting academic research, legal frameworks, and industrial practice.
