What does sustainability mean when the camera is rolling? How are ESG principles—environmental, social, and governance factors—applied in the context of film production, education, and festivals? The next Sustainable Hour delves deeper into what lies behind the term “sustainable film industry”, from the perspective of producers and festival organizers.
When the film industry begins to reflect on its own footprint—be it aesthetic, social, or environmental—it raises questions that go beyond artistic expression. ESG frameworks are increasingly shaping global industrial policies and financial flows, and the audiovisual sector, often seen as an extraterritorial creative space, must recognize its own responsibility.
Our speakers come from diverse positions within the industry: production, commercial, and festival sectors. Each of these areas faces its own set of challenges and opportunities in the context of ESG transformation.
Speakers:
- Morana Ikić Komljenović, producer and advocate for sustainability in the film industry, will explain how ESG is becoming an integral part of modern co-productions, with a focus on international practices and regulations (ALBERT, GREEN FILM, Eurimages).
- Nerma Mehadžić, producer with many years of experience in commercial production, will explore how ESG criteria are shaping advertising narratives—and why the industry can no longer afford to ignore them.
- Sanja Borčić, head producer of the Cinehill Festival, will offer insights from behind the scenes: location selection, waste reduction, community engagement—sustainability as festival dramaturgy.
The lecture will be held on Thursday, May 8 at 5:30 PM, and will seek to answer a central question: Can the film industry take on a transformative role in sustainability—not just thematically, but structurally?
