Sustainable Hour: Straw – The Building Material of the Future

January 30, 2025 | 5:30 PM

Straw as a building material is increasingly emerging as a response to the global sustainability challenges in the construction sector. How can plant-based materials, such as straw, reduce the negative environmental impact of construction? What are their key characteristics, and how can they be effectively utilized in contemporary architecture?

As part of the Sustainable Hour at Urania – Space of Creation, Marina Zajec, architect and founder of the studio Arhitektura E.L.I., will explore the potential of straw in construction. Using one of her studio’s projects as an example, Marina will present the process of designing and building with straw, providing insights into all stages, from concept to realisation.

Additionally, she will analyse recent developments within the European Union, where prefabricated elements made of wood and straw are becoming increasingly common. Marina will examine the possibilities for their application in Croatia, particularly in the public sector. The lecture will address the barriers hindering wider implementation of these solutions and explore potential strategies to enable a transition toward a more sustainable future in construction.

The lecture is intended for architects, urban planners, students, and anyone interested in sustainability and the future of the architectural profession.

Seats are limited, so please reserve your spot here. Admission is free!
