Sustainable tourism must not remain just a phrase but must become a concrete concept that ensures a long-term balance between the interests of the local community, visitors, and the environment. While the number of tourist beds in Croatia continues to grow, the number of residents is declining, and real estate prices are becoming unaffordable. What are the consequences of such developments? How can we combat the excessive conversion of residential properties into tourist apartments, and how can urban planning policies steer changes toward more sustainable tourism models?
These questions will be the focus of the upcoming Sustainable Hour: Tourism and Society, which will take place at Urania – Space of Creation, on Thursday, March 20, at 5:30 PM. The discussion will feature relevant experts who will examine the future of tourism and its impact on space and community from different perspectives:
One of the key challenges is the coexistence of the local community and the tourism sector. In an ideal model, residents and visitors share the same spaces and amenities, but the reality is increasingly the opposite – local populations are retreating in the face of mass tourism, and historic city centers are turning into mere backdrops.
On the other hand, despite the growing number of apartments, housing availability is dramatically decreasing. How can we return homes to their primary function? What role does urban planning play in this, and can it better regulate the conversion of residences into tourist apartments? Can we redefine the relationship between hotels and private accommodations to create a model that benefits everyone in the long run?
We will discuss these and other critical questions at Sustainable Hour – a space for open dialogue and expert perspectives.
