Can tourism be both global and locally responsible? How are ESG principles reshaping the relationships between large tourism systems and their suppliers? On Thursday, June 26 at 5:30 PM, as part of the series ESG in Focus – Powered by Erste, we explore how Valamar and its suppliers are creating new standards in sustainable tourism through a multi-layered ESG strategy.
Valamar views the tourism industry as a "pathway to sustainability"—a systemic approach to protecting nature and people through six strategic initiatives: climate preservation, protection of the Adriatic Sea and biodiversity, circular water and waste management, strengthening local communities, destination development, and transparent governance. These initiatives are supported by 12 measurable goals by 2026, including full energy transition, local employment, responsible sourcing, and certification of all properties.
While the goals are ambitious, Valamar is already making significant progress: 100% of its electricity consumption comes from renewable sources, and greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by over 70% since 2015. Valamar is thus emerging as a regional leader in sustainable tourism.
The program will open with a keynote by Tea Pestotnik Prebeg, Head of Quality and Sustainability at Valamar, presenting the strategic framework “Valamar: Pathway to Sustainability” and the tools used to align ESG vision with tangible action.
The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leading representatives from Valamar’s supplier network:
The program will be moderated by Danijela Trbović, Head of External Communications at Erste Bank.
This discussion reveals how the ESG approach is implemented throughout the entire value chain—from supplier practices to financial instruments and infrastructure.
Critical insight: Valamar’s strategy positions sustainable tourism as a market imperative—but its success depends on the integration of local suppliers, CO₂ reduction both within and beyond hotel properties, and transparent tools for capital flow and return on investment. A well-timed partnership with Erste Bank acts as a catalyst for replication, but also for competitiveness.
Key questions we are asking:
The event is open to professionals from tourism, sustainability, supply chain management, and sustainable finance—as well as to anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of real ESG implementation.
The next lecture in the ESG in Focus – Powered by Erste series is scheduled for September. Follow Urania and Erste for updates and the continuation of the sustainability dialogue.
