Join us for the first lecture of the Sustainable Hour at Urania, where we will explore innovative urban planning methods that help mitigate the effects of climate change in collaboration with ACO company.
Climate change is posing increasing challenges for cities around the world, and one of the key tasks of urban planning is to ensure natural cooling in urban areas. Solutions such as green walls, cool roofs, and the creation of urban green spaces can significantly contribute to cooling city areas. However, research shows that the greatest contribution comes from large, shady trees.
The increasing urbanisation and reduction of green areas in cities lead to the phenomenon of urban heat islands, raising temperatures in urban areas and increasing the risk of flooding due to insufficient absorption capacity of surfaces. To ensure the healthy growth and longevity of city trees, it is crucial to provide them with enough underground space. Trees fully develop their climate potential only after 20 years when their canopy becomes large enough, requiring at least 35 cubic meters of root space.
One of the most innovative approaches to this challenge is the "Sponge Cities" concept, which ensures the healthy development and survival of large-canopy trees on paved surfaces, extending their lifespan to at least 80 to 100 years. ACO, as a partner of the Schwammstadt working group, has developed a modular system for rainwater collection and purification adapted to local conditions, contributing to sustainable surface water management in cities.
Join us and learn how we can shape a sustainable future for our cities with innovative solutions that protect the environment and improve the quality of life in urban areas.
