What can we learn from Vienna’s housing model, and what does a city look like when it has been thoughtfully developing its housing policy for decades?
Our guests are architect Saša Bradić, from BUP architekten and a lecturer at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), and architect Aljoša Kotnjek. Both live and work in Vienna, yet they bring very different perspectives and experiences of the city.
Saša Bradić has lived and worked in Vienna for more than 30 years. Housing has been at the heart of his professional work for many years, and he has completed a number of residential projects. He knows Vienna and its housing system from the perspective of an architect who has been actively involved in its practice and development for decades.
Aljoša Kotnjek has been living and working in Vienna for just over a year. He first encountered the city’s housing system from a very personal perspective – while looking for a home for himself. Soon afterwards, he also became familiar with Vienna’s housing policies professionally, through his work on a competition for a residential complex to be developed through a public-private partnership model.
Before moving to Vienna, Aljoša lived and worked in Zagreb for five years, which makes his comparative perspective particularly interesting: What is different? What works better? And where might we recognise some of the same challenges?
Together, we will discuss the experience of living in Vienna: who builds housing and for whom, how people access housing, what role the City of Vienna and the public sector play, and what it means to live in a city that has treated housing as one of its key public concerns for decades.
This will not be just a conversation about architecture.
It will be a conversation about the city, housing and everyday life – and about what we can learn from Vienna’s experience and apply in our own city.
