Ansambl Synchronos
Co-funded by the City of Zagreb and the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS)
The third concert in the Architecture and Music cycle at Urania presents an evening dedicated to the interplay of acoustic and spatial thinking. Ensemble Synchronos performs three world premieres by composers Ivana Kiš, Laura Čuperjani, and Emma-Kate Matthews, each exploring how space can be shaped through sound and how music can be experienced as architecture in time.
Program:
Laura Čuperjani – Liquid Space (world premiere)
Ivana Kiš – de profundis (world premiere)
Emma-Kate Matthews – Betwixt & Between (world premiere)
Ensemble Synchronos:
James Hall – flute
Bruno Philipp – clarinet
Vlatka Peljhan – violin
Smiljan Mrčela – cello
Mia Elezović – piano
Laura Čuperjani’s Liquid Space investigates sound as fluid matter—constantly reshaping itself, shifting, and moving—an acoustic space that breathes and changes its contours. In de profundis, Ivana Kiš draws on the sacred architecture of Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, translating its spiritual verticality into a dense sonic texture that evokes the spatiality of light and depth. In Betwixt & Between, Emma-Kate Matthews constructs a liminal space between tones, where sound and silence do not oppose each other but coexist in a state of tension and uncertainty.
The concert transcends traditional understandings of musical performance, becoming an exploration of how space is perceived through listening. Sound is not treated as an addition to architecture, but as its essence: a spatial event emerging in the in-between space shared by performers, the venue, and the audience.
The program includes a lecture by composer and architect Marko Slaviček, as well as a conversation with Emma-Kate Matthews, also both composer and architect, offering theoretical context and deeper insight into the relationship between architectural and musical thought.
With this concert, we conclude the Architecture and Music cycle, which has affirmed Urania as a space for reflecting on contemporary music through an interdisciplinary dialogue of sound, space, and theory.
