This year marks the 30th anniversary of My Own Private Idaho, one of the classic queer films.
There is no explicit promotion of politics in the film, nothing which forcibly tries to prove queer as common or normal. Instead, Van Sant, the director, achieves what few artists do: he tells the story of those with a solitary experience that is not normative, and he does that in a characteristically subtle way.
The story follows two friends, Mike Waters and Scott Favor, played by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves respectively, as they embark on a journey of personal discovery that takes them from Portland, Oregon to Mike's hometown in Idaho, and then to Rome in search of Mike's mother.
