It Takes Courage to Create an Icon.
When Konstantin Grcic designed Chair_One for Magis in 2003, he created more than a chair - he conceived a structure that exists on the boundary between architecture and design, between object and sculpture. Its constructivist language, realized through die-cast aluminum, expressed not only technical innovation but also the very philosophy of “Magis” - Latin for “more” - a continuous pursuit of exploration, radical experimentation, and faith in the creative process.
Two decades later, Chair_One remains one of the most recognizable works of contemporary design. To mark its anniversary, Magis has produced a limited edition - 16 unique pieces with a base made of lava from Mount Etna - further emphasizing the strength and timelessness of this avant-garde form.
In collaboration between Urania and Themelia, on Thursday, October 16, at 5:30 p.m., the limited edition Chair_One and the story behind the Magis philosophy will be presented.
The event will feature Alberto Perazza, CEO of Magis, who has guided the company through global expansion while maintaining a deep connection to local craftsmanship and the Italian design tradition.
The introduction will be given by Lana Rosandić, owner of Themelia.
Since its founding in 1976, Magis has been synonymous with innovation. The vision of Eugenio Perazza and his successors has never been merely about producing furniture, but about constantly questioning the boundaries of design. From Jasper Morrison’s Bottle and Air-Chair, to works by the Bouroullec brothers, Jaime Hayon, and many others - Magis collaborations have become part of the permanent collections of MoMA New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and other major institutions worldwide.
Chair_One holds a special place within this canon. Its open, mesh-like geometry was never just an aesthetic choice - it was a conceptual decision: to create an object that is both solid and airy, radical yet universal. Over the past two decades, the chair has found its place in museums, public spaces, and private interiors across the globe.
The talk at Urania will explore how icons are created and sustained - and what it means to design “more than furniture.”
In a time that demands sustainability, longevity, and responsible design, Chair_One stands as a reminder that courage and visionary experimentation can yield objects that transcend their era and become part of our collective cultural heritage.
